In one paragraph

KRATEO Setmaster is mastering for recorded DJ sets. It levels a set with one gain per drop and a smooth ramp between drops, and nothing compresses it, so each track keeps its own transients and dynamics. The sound only changes where it goes louder into the clipper, or on a click you marked. Setmaster runs in a desktop browser, with nothing to install and no account, and the first 60 minutes of a set are free.

In four paragraphs

The tracks in a DJ set are mastered already. What differs between them in a recorded set is their level: the DJ mixed for the room they played in, or set a trim or a channel fader by ear, and the drops come in at different loudness. Setmaster is not a track mastering service. Instead of compressing the whole set again, it leaves the tracks as they are and only evens out the level between drops.

For DJs who record long sets, up to four hours, Setmaster does the job you could do by hand in a DAW: it finds each drop, measures it, lifts the quieter ones toward the loudest, and shows you every number it picked. It levels by volume alone: it proposes one gain per drop, you can change any of them before you render, and your upload stays as it is. Machine learning does one job here. It finds the drops; the gains come from measurement and arithmetic.

For the final level, clean puts your music's true peak at -1 dBTP. Louder goes into the clipper, and Setmaster marks the point where it starts to sound rough. You hear every step before you render. A vinyl recording can carry clicks louder than the music. Setmaster's artefact detection finds them, you review each one, and the clicks you mark come out of the mastering, so they don't hold your level down.

The editor is there for when you want to change something: trim, cut, EQ, pan, and any drop it proposed. The master arrives by email. Setmaster is part of KRATEO, an independent DJ ecosystem created by El Kolbo, a DJ and producer based in Germany.

Why Setmaster levels by section

One way to master a set is to run it through a whole mastering chain from start to end. Setmaster levels it by section instead.

A set through one mastering chain, and a set levelled by Setmaster
One chain over the whole setSetmaster
An automatic gain follows the level over several seconds and lifts it where it drops. It hears a level, not a section: a quiet break and a quiet track look the same to it.Setmaster finds the drops and breaks in the whole set, measures each drop and gives it one gain, toward your loudest. All of it is decided from the whole set before the master is rendered.
It does not know where a drop begins or where a break ends. That can lead to pumping and to blurred boundaries between drops and breaks. The gain holds flat through each drop and only changes inside the break, on a smooth curve that arrives at the next drop's level where that drop begins. A break is never lifted on its own: it only carries the curve between the drops around it.
Compression, EQ, saturation and a limiter shape the sound of every track. The tracks are mastered already, so there is no compressor, no limiter and no automatic EQ. Each keeps its tone, transients and dynamics. For more loudness you can push the levelled master into a clipper, and then the sound changes.

In the master, every drop lands at one level and holds it from start to end, and the breaks stay below the drops. Every boundary and every gain Setmaster proposes is shown, and you can change any of them before you render.

The Setmaster start screen: the KRATEO Setmaster logo above a dashed drop zone that reads Drop your DJ set here, or click to browse, with WAV / MP3 / FLAC and max 4 hours underneath.
Start. The first screen of the app: drop in a set, WAV, MP3 or FLAC, up to four hours. Full resolution, PNG, 2880 x 1800.
The Setmaster editor at step 3, Leveler: the waveform marked into drops and breaks, a green gain line with one handle per drop, a lane below with the loudness of each section, and the Set Leveler bar with its on switch and the pull fader.
Levelling. The drops and breaks Setmaster found, and one proposed gain per drop, ramped through the breaks. Drag a boundary or set a gain by hand; the pull sets how far the drops move toward the loudest. Full resolution, PNG, 2880 x 1800.
The Setmaster loudness step on its first page, Clicks: a line of text that asks you to listen to each click and mark it Click or Music, and below it a click with its time, a Listen button and the choice Click or Music.
Clicks. Each short click Setmaster finds above the music, to listen to and mark Click or Music. The clicks you mark come out of the mastering and do not count toward the level. Full resolution, PNG, 2880 x 1800.
The Setmaster loudness step on its second page, Level: four cards from Quieter to Clip drive, the final level at -1 dBTP, and below it the master at this setting, with loudness, true peak, clips and clipped samples, and a streaming panel that reads Room for the re-encode.
Loudness, clean. The final level, here at -1 dBTP. Below it: loudness, true peak, clipping, and whether a streaming platform's re-encode has room. Full resolution, PNG, 2880 x 1800.
The Setmaster loudness step on its second page, Level, louder into the clipper at the sweet spot, with the card Clip drive selected. Red marks on the waveform show where peaks are clipped, and the streaming panel warns: No room for the re-encode.
Loudness, clip drive. Louder, into the clipper, at the sweet spot Setmaster marks. The streaming panel warns that a platform's lossy re-encode can clip these peaks again. Full resolution, PNG, 2880 x 1800.

About KRATEO

KRATEO is an independent DJ ecosystem created by El Kolbo, a DJ and producer based in Germany. It has three pillars:

  • Tools: software for before, during and after the set.
  • Sessions: recorded DJ sets and live events under the KRATEO name.
  • Records: coming in the future.

KRATEO DJ and Setmaster are part of Tools. KRATEO DJ, free for Mac and Windows, is a second home for your library: convenient playback and track recall training. Setmaster is mastering for DJ sets, in the browser. Two more tools are coming soon: KRATEO DJ Mobile, the iOS companion to KRATEO DJ, and Pulse, a live crowd mood heatmap for events.
